Bringing Inquiry into the Social Studies Classroom

The demands of the 21st Century require students who can investigate intentionally, think critically, and argue persuasively. The Bringing Inquiry into the Social Studies Classroom Virtual Institute is an interactive professional learning program that supports teachers to design inquiry instructions aligned with the C3 Framework. Developed for social studies teachers for grades 6-12, this Institute focuses on helping teachers learn how to design compelling questions that motivate inquiry, select and adapt sources, and facilitate discussions that allow students to make connections between past and present. Participants will be equipped with practical strategies and techniques for online implementation of Stanford History Education Group's Reading Like a Historian curriculum, which engages students with authentic sources and compelling questions. Participants will also learn how to design student-driven historical inquiry activities that capitalize on the vast array of online digital resources. Educators will leave this Institute with a plan for how to bring inquiry into their social studies classroom.
