"The University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Literacy Network is proposing to provide Delhi Private School Jebel Ali with a certificate program consisting of 3 half day virtual sessions on content from PLN 1: Forming & Reforming Reading, Writing and Talking Across the Curriculum. After successfully meeting program requirements a certificate of completion is awarded to participants through The Penn Literacy Network of the University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, we can provide 2 virtual half day leadership workshops to support leaders in education with a mindset of change.
The certificate program will be cohort based and separated into KG, primary, and middle/high school levels. The programming will introduce a variety of practical literacy and learning strategies anchored in the research-based PLN frameworks and provide support for teachers to engage with students in an online or traditional classroom setting across the curriculum. Participants in this workshop will actively engage in learning experiences that offer ideas to engage students in literacy-rich activities of reading, writing, speaking, and talking to impact learning, including discussions about how to adapt these approaches for students in the specified grades and levels of ability across the curriculum.
Participants investigate the PLN Frameworks of The Five Reading, Writing, and Talking Processes and The Four Lenses of Learning, apply these concepts and frameworks to their classroom materials and content texts/lessons, and make adaptations based on their own contexts and curriculum frameworks. Participants also engage in learning experiences that are rich in problem-solving, critical thinking, and logical reasoning including discussions about how to adapt these approaches for inclusion students. Educators learn how to engage students in transacting with text (comprehension), composing text, extending reading and writing through a workshop format, investigating language, and learning to learn activities that encourage students to metacognitively reflect on their own learning.
After successfully meeting program requirements a certificate of completion is awarded to participants through The Penn Literacy Network of the University of Pennsylvania. Program requirements will be co-constructed once partnership is confirmed.
PLN’s focus on The Five Reading, Writing, and Talking Processes shares the same theme as the ELA and cross-curricular state standards: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Language. PLN’s framework of The Four Lenses encompasses the implicit goals of state and local standards: scaffolding to independence, integrated literacy in all content areas, the connection of learning and literacy, social emotional wellness, trauma-informed classrooms and the importance of K-12 consistency and articulation. PLN programs and courses guide educators toward curricula and teaching strategies that provide students with a deeper understanding of subject matter and the skills they need to apply their knowledge."
